On 29th March 2023, Livetec’s Technical Director, Julian Sparrey will be joining a panel discussion at the Animal Health Canada’s HPAI Workshop: Canadian Perspective. The workshop has been created as an information sharing activity between FPT Governments and industry to discuss enhanced biosecurity and preparedness.
Julian will be joining Graham Knox from the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture and Food (Canada) and Martin Pelletier from The Quebec Poultry Disease Control Team to share insights on models for emergency depopulation response, the learnings from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the UK and regional experiences. Julian will also go into detail on how the technology is being used in the UK and the animal welfare science behind it.
This hybrid event will be offered in both French and English. Livetec will be joining this virtually.
An overview of avian influenza in the UK
In the past, avian influenza outbreaks were infrequent in the UK’s commercial poultry flock. However, this situation has undergone a significant transformation. During the winter season of 2020/2021, four AI strains were identified in the UK, with the first outbreak being reported on November 3rd, 2020, in Deal, Kent (LP H5N2).
Over the course of the season, an additional 24 outbreaks occurred in domestic poultry, with the last confirmed case being reported on March 27th, 2021.
Between September 2022 and March 2023, the number of outbreaks caused by H5N1 dramatically increased from 150 to an unprecedented 172. You can read our outbreak timeline here.
Preventing the spread of avian influenza
In order to prevent the spread of a deadly disease, it is now more important than ever to implement strict biosecurity measures. An outbreak could have devastating consequences for your flock or backyard pets, affecting you both economically and emotionally. As there is currently no cure, prevention is the only means of protection.
