Livetec Systems, the UK’s leading experts in biosecurity, have produced a documentary that has been shown as part of the World Farmers Organisation’s (WFO) delegation at COP28 in UAE at the end of November. The two-week conference brings together global leaders, policy makers and NGOs to address climate change.
There have been more than 200 outbreaks of avian influenza in the UK and the picture is equally worrying globally, with 81 countries across five continents reporting outbreaks in 2022/23.
Interviewed for the film, farmer Josh Watson is under no illusion as to the seriousness of a disease outbreak. “It would just destroy everything we’ve ever worked towards… You wake up every day and think, ‘Well, let’s hope nothing ever happens to us.’” he said.
Livetec’s Technical Director, Julian Sparrey understands Josh’s concerns: “We need to keep disease out of farms and good biosecurity practice is the key to achieving that.”
Biosecurity is at the core of Livetec’s approach as they strive to build the future of livestock protection, focussing on the 3 Ps: preparation, prevention and planning.
The film illustrates how Livetec have advised Josh on protecting his business against disease through extensive biosecurity processes and innovative technology that allows him to access data about his birds and business. It is data that is key to Livetec’s digital innovation, as Commercial Director Gordon Samet explains: “Our platform can draw data from multiple sources; from government, from NGOs and from our customers. It can analyse that data and it can re-present it in a way that really helps turn proper decisions. It can become a complete farm management system.”
Through this film and by partnering with the WFO, Livetec hope to spread the message about biosecurity globally and the digital platform has been built with this in mind, being product agnostic and not country specific.
Julian Sparrey said, “Whether you’re a farmer in Burkina Faso, in Ethiopia, or you’ve got backyard chickens in Bangladesh, you can see a constantly updated picture in your particular area, in your region, in your country. That’s vital data at their fingertips, in their language, in their production systems, to make value-driven, evidence-driven decisions about how they can best protect their birds.”
