Update 01.08.2024
It seems that the number of applications for drones is limitless: from defence to environmentally friendly firework displays, there really is no end to the opportunities for drone use. Farming is no different with many forward-thinking producers making the most of the opportunities this versatile technology can bring.
A growing industry
It’s a growing industry. Research predicts that the agricultural drone industry will generate 100,000 jobs in the U.S. alone and $82 billion in additional economic activity.
According to BI Intelligence, “Drones can mechanise every step of farming, eliminating the costs of human errors and enabling farmers to react quickly to threats (such as drought conditions and pests), helping them maximise income and returns on investment in the end.”
The down to earth, on-farm benefits
Drones can be used to monitor herds and flocks from the sky and alert farmers to any unusual activity that could suggest an incursion by pests or wild birds that may carry disease onto the farm. When paired with infrared cameras they can conduct health assessments, including identifying any increase in temperature levels that could be a potential threat to a flock.
They can assist in infrastructure monitoring and maintenance, helping farmers to see where fence repair is needed for example or where roofing on animal housing is developing gaps or breakages. They can be used to transport supplies from one part of the farm to another more efficiently.
An overview on poultry protection
Drones can play an important part in protecting poultry. From tracking their movements including how they sit, stand and walk (which can indicate disease or injury) to protecting their environment, ensuring perimeter and housing security and alerting farmers to the encroachment of pests and wild birds onto their premises.
Integrating technology into farming practices
Drones have become a large factor in advancing technology within agricultural settings, enforcing them as a significant factor in the evolution and integration of on-farm practices, but they are one of many solutions that can be applied in real-time to farm management.
