Our debut at Pigs Tomorrow 2025 gave the Livetec Systems team a front-row seat to the future of UK pig farming. Surrounded by pioneering producers, innovators, researchers and policy influencers, we joined a powerful conversation about resilience, biosecurity, and sustainable growth. It was a dynamic and eye-opening event and a milestone moment as we expand our support for the pig sector.
Representing Livetec were Julian Sparrey, Group Technical Director, and Paul Talling, Biosecurity Advisor. They connected with stakeholders, participated in discussions, and delivered a well-received session on practical biosecurity measures and contingency planning.
Here are our key takeaways from the event:
ASF: The shadow over the industry
African Swine Fever (ASF) was the dominant concern across the conference. Nearly every speaker referenced it as the most significant threat facing the sector. One that could bring exports, production, and movement to a standstill almost overnight.
Despite widespread awareness, there was a noticeable reluctance to fully confront the issue.
“Everyone mentioned ASF, but it felt like no one wanted to really talk about it. It’s like if we don’t say it out loud, maybe it won’t happen.” – Paul Talling
This underscores the urgent need for the industry to move from passive awareness to active preparedness, something Livetec is fully committed to supporting.
From foot dips to zoning: a shift in biosecurity mindset
Julian Sparrey’s presentation on biosecurity was the final session of the day, it drew strong applause and engaged feedback.
His key message was simple: biosecurity needs to be practical, not performative.
“The industry must move away from tick-box biosecurity. Changing boots is more effective than stepping into a dirty foot dip.” – Julian Sparrey
His call for better zoning, dedicated equipment, and common-sense hygiene protocols resonated with producers, especially those beginning to think seriously about how to safeguard their units from ASF and other threats.
Looking Ahead
We left the event with new connections, valuable insights, and a renewed sense of purpose. As the pig industry faces ongoing risks from disease threats to supply chain fragility, Livetec’s role in supporting preparedness, training, and contingency planning has never been more relevant.
“Contingency planning isn’t about fear — it’s about protecting what we’ve built. And that starts with asking: what if?” – Julian Sparrey
