Strengthening the Future of Free Range: Why We Continue to Support BFREPA

Running a free-range egg production unit is a 24-hour-a-day job. While producers are busy caring for hens, maintaining welfare standards, and keeping farms running smoothly, there are constant external pressures shaping the industry – supermarket pricing strategies, new legislation, assurance schemes, and shifting market demands.

For individual producers, it can often feel impossible to have a voice in these decisions. That’s where the British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) plays such a vital role.

Standing Up for Free Range Producers

For over 30 years, BFREPA has been the collective voice of the UK’s free range egg sector, bringing together hundreds of producers to influence policy, shape industry standards, and secure a fair deal for those working on the ground.

The organisation’s core objectives mirror our own values:

  • To maintain and improve the quality of British free-range eggs.
  • To encourage the promotion of British produce.
  • To advance welfare standards and sustainability across the sector.

BFREPA’s influence extends across the industry:

  • It sits on the NFU Poultry Board, representing free range producers within wider agricultural policy.
  • It is guided by a Council of Producers, ensuring practical, farmer-led decision-making.
  • It supports research projects that improve welfare, efficiency, and sustainability outcomes.

Our Contribution as an Associate Member

We’re proud to continue our commitment as an Associate Member of BFREPA – not only because we share its values, but because we actively contribute to the community it represents.

Our goal is to support producers with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to manage risk, improve welfare, and protect their livelihoods. Those working in egg, and poultry production benefit from:

  • Livestock Protect – our digital platform helping farmers manage biosecurity, emergency response plans and site visitors logs with smart, accessible tools.
  • A free AI (Avian Influenza) tracking app, giving producers up-to-date local information and alerts to strengthen disease preparedness.
  • Expert biosecurity and contingency planning guidance, developed to help farms stay compliant and ready for emerging challenges.
  • Training and education opportunities designed to build practical skills and share best practice across the free-range sector.

Putting Contingency Planning into Practice

The importance of contingency planning isn’t theoretical – it’s proven in the field.

James Baxter, Chair of BFREPA and a leading free range egg producer, worked with Livetec to strengthen his farm’s resilience through tailored contingency planning. When his unit faced a disease challenge, his plan helped him act quickly and effectively – ultimately saving an estimated £45,000 in potential losses.

You can read more about James’s experience here: 👉 How contingency planning helped James Baxter save £45,000

James’s story is a clear example of how the right preparation, tools, and support can make a tangible difference – helping producers protect their flocks, finances, and future.

Looking Ahead to the BFREPA Conference

As we look ahead to the BFREPA Conference this November, we’re excited to connect with producers, partners, and industry leaders who share our commitment to improving welfare, strengthening resilience, and driving innovation across the free-range sector.

Supporting a Sustainable Future for Free Range Eggs

BFREPA ensures that producers’ voices are heard and that welfare and sustainability remain at the heart of the industry. By continuing to support the organisation – and by sharing our expertise and technology with its members – we’re helping strengthen the resilience and success of the free-range community.

Together, we can build a future where British free range egg production continues to thrive through collaboration, innovation, and shared commitment to excellence.
