The most efficient solution for large-scale on-farm depopulation using carbon dioxide.
When there’s an infectious disease outbreak, like highly pathogenic avian influenza, the need for the rapid culling of large flocks is imperative. There are a number of methods of on-farm depopulation but whole-house gassing (WHG) is one of the quickest solutions to prevent the spread of deadly diseases.
To provide emergency mass depopulation of poultry in a house or shed our WHG system introduces carbon dioxide gas, increasing concentrations to above 45%, reducing oxygen to below 10%. This delivers an effective, efficient and most importantly, a humane culling service.
Injection system
There are risks when using a single lance injection system around the poor distribution of gas, which is why Livetec have devised a multi point release system that addresses this problem and improves the distribution of gas throughout the whole shed.
The CO2 is delivered via a temporary ring main with hoses and release points in a loop inside the house or shed, with the gas directed up and away from the birds. As it creates less dry ice, the time taken to ventilate the premises after gassing is significantly reduced.
Multipoint gas monitoring system
To ensure the effective delivery of gas within the shed, we have a multipoint monitoring system that measures and records gas concentrations at 10 locations. There are also temperature sensors positioned just above the birds throughout.
A temporary CCTV system with low light, infrared cameras are placed inside and outside the shed, so the behaviour of the birds can be observed for any welfare issues and the external areas can be monitored for the health and safety of the farmers and staff.
Livetec comprehensively supports the operation by risk assessment, method statement, operation checklist and individual task details. And it’s conducted under a general permit to work from the site owner.
Livetec have evolved this system based on our own in-house research and development. As we help clients build their emergency response strategies, they know they can rely on us to provide the most effective, efficient WHG service, should the worst happen.
