Reduce the impact of an outbreak

It is now more important than ever for all those who care for domesticated poultry to be able to spot avian influenza symptoms.

Spotting these symptoms early can reduce the impact that an outbreak can have on your business.

Equally important is having stringent biosecurity protocols in place to reduce the risk of an outbreak occurring.

Avian influenza symptoms

The clinical signs of avian flu can vary across species and appear in a combination of symptoms, these include:

  • A sudden increase in birds found dead
  • A number of birds affected in the same area
  • Swollen heads
  • Swelling of the comb and wattles with a blue discolouration
  • Dropping wings or dragging legs
  • A twist in the neck or head
  • Closed and watery eyes
  • Lethargy, depression and unresponsiveness
  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Tremors in the head and body
  • Haemorrhaging on the shanks ot the legs and under the skins of the neck
  • Lack of appetite and decrease in water consumption
  • Respiratory problems – gasping and coughing
  • An increase in body temperature and fever
  • Gurgling, sneezing and rattling
  • Watery and discoloured droppings
  • A noticeable reducing in egg production

If any of these symptoms are spotted within your poultry you must promptly get expert advice from your vet. Avian influenza, if confirmed, is classified as a notifiable disease and you legally have to inform the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
